S3 Powersports in Louisiana sent us some new pics of this amazing custom UTV on a brand new set of MotoSport Alloys 14×7 M17 Elixir wheels that were powder-coated to match the rest of the machine’s theme. The Elixir wheels were then mounted on a big ass set of 30x10x14 EFX MotoMonster tires and finally installed on this lifted behemoth.

The 10th Annual Yamaha Special Edition ATVs

Glamis, CA (2/2/2012) – For the tenth year in a row, Yamaha has hosted a Special Edition sport ATV ride at the Glamis Imperial Sand Dunes in southern California, and for 2012, Yamaha once again released a special edition Raptor 700R SE and YFZ450R SE, which are a favorite among sport ATV enthusiast.

This is one event that we truly look forward to attending each year because the Yamaha crew really goes out of their way to make it a fun experience, and 2012 was no different as they arranged some for special guest to attend along with some fun activities and great food for our two day adventure out in Glamis, and we were very pleased to see the Camp Chef crew return to provide an array of delicious camping-inspired cuisine.

This was the second year for the Camp Chef crew to be a part of the Yamaha SE press event, and we couldn’t have been happier because we knew we were in store for some great food that was cooked on their exceptional outdoor cooking gear. Camp Chef makes an incredibly wide line of outdoor cooking equipment, including grills, gas ovens, Dutch ovens and smokers to name a few. Their cooking gear is designed to be portable, yet built to last, which makes it perfect for taking camping, and Camp Chef’s Steve McGrath and Matt Anderson treated us to some delicious meals.

The Camp Chef crew also hosted a horse shoe tournament on our first night out in the dunes with an 18” Camp Chef smoke vault up for grabs, and we are excited to announce that ATVRiders.com’s own Harlen Foley won the tournament, and he can’t wait to use the smoke vault once it arrives back home in Maryland.

We were also joined by the Go Pro guys who were demonstrating their new HD Hero 2 cameras. Released in November, the HD Hero 2 offers plenty of cool features, but the new 11mega-pixel camera option and 60 frames per second video in 720P mode option really captured our attention, so we were eager to put the Hero 2 to the test on our ride, and we were pleasantly pleased with the image quality produced by such a small portable camera.

Also, Go Pro announced they are developing a Wi-Fi BacPac to view the photos and videos on your smart phone while out riding, so you can quickly check out your video footage or images and even share them with friends online before even leaving the trail, which is awesome.

In addition to the Special Edition YFZ450R & Raptor 700R, Yamaha had several Raptor 250’s on hand for anyone interested in rallying around a short track they had set up along a pit the area, which was really fun. Yamaha Pro ATV racer’s Dustin Nelson and Josh Row were on hand and went out several times racing around and pushing the little quads to limit. It is actually amazing how well they perform in the sand considering they are only 250cc machines. The Raptor 250’s were fun, but we were eager to get out on the dunes with the 2012 Raptor 700R SE and the YFZ450R SE.

As for the 2012 Special Edition models, the Yamaha Raptor 700R SE comes in a Black Gold color scheme with all black fenders, wheels, and chassis, which is accented by some stylish gold colored graphics. Also the 700R SE comes with a GYTR front bumper and heel guards along with a rear wave style brake rotor.

The 2012 Special Edition YFZ450R has a stylish barbed wire themed graphics kit on black and yellow fenders along with an all-black chassis and wheels. It is also equipped with the quick release fender fasteners along with a GYTR front bumper. Also for 2012, all the YFZ450R models received a minor update with all new front and rear Dunlop tires. The front tires saw a minor tread pattern change, but the rears were given a complete makeover with a more aggressive tread pattern to provide for improved sliding and better corner exiting traction.

After checking out all the features of the Special Edition models, it was finally time to go riding, and the weather was nearly perfect. Usually when we go to Glamis, it is windy and we are getting sand blasted the entire time, but that wasn’t the case for this trip. The winds were clam and the weather was excellent with temps in the 80’s, but without any wind, the dunes were a bit rougher than normal, but we weren’t complaining, considering our ride location.

On the first day out in the dunes, we spent most of the day riding around looking for locations to capture some cool photos and videos of the SE models, so we brought along pro ATV racer, #417 Josh Row, for the ride, and he helped us find some amazing photo opportunities as he carved the dunes with his YFZ 450R race quad along with the Special Edition YFZ450R. Also, Josh found several big dune jumps that he launched with ease, which also made for a very enjoyable day of riding.

After spending most of day one working on capturing the experience, we focused on enjoying the ride in the sand on day two, so 18 of us heading out Wednesday morning for a several hour long ride through the sand dunes, which was epic with some many people carving the dunes together as a group on the YFZ450R and Raptor 700R models.

A trip to the Glamis sand dunes needs to be on every ATV enthusiast “Bucket List” because it is unlike any other ride location in the US with miles and miles of dunes & to do it with a large group of people makes it even better. While on the ride, we captured this photo with our chest mounted GoPro HD Hero2, which gives you an idea of the quality this little camera can produce

As usual, we had a blast on the Yamaha Raptor 700R SE, which is right at home in the Glamis sand dunes with its big bore engine that offers smooth power that seems to never end. Besides having plenty of power, the Raptor 700R provides an extremely comfortable ride with its plush seat and premium suspension.

If you are looking for an ATV that won’t wear you out after a few hours of riding, the Raptor 700R is the perfect choice. Plus, if you want to get aggressive and attack the dunes, it has the power and suspension to provide for a safe and enjoyable ride nearly comparable to that of the YFZ450R in the sand, which makes it our number one sport ATV choice for a full day of riding in the dunes.

As for the Yamaha YFZ40R SE, it is race bread and can handle nearly anything you throw at it in the sand dunes with its high performance engine and top notch suspension.. Also, it low center of gravity, makes it perfect for carving the dunes, and its high-end suspension makes it perfect for taking to flight over the sand dunes as it can easily out jump and corner the Raptor 700R.

We have always liked the YFZ450R for aggressive riding, and we spent a good deal of time launching it on this trip, which it does very well. The YFZ 450R SE flies straight and is controllable in the air, but the best part about it is the landings, which it handles with ease. The sport tuned suspension of the YFZ450R is very good right out of the box and took every hit without ever bottoming out.

KING OF THE HAMMERS:

The event that started it all, the 6th running of the Griffin King of the Hammers will be the largest to date with an expanded Vendor show, and additional entertainment.Look for some exciting changes to the race course as well as improved spectator areas. Again the event will take place during the second week of February and the main event will be held on Friday, February 10, 2012. 4Wheel parts will host the Time Trials and Last Chance Qualifier and make daily deliveries of parts to the lake bed during the week of KOH.

Kymco knows the potential of the side-by-side market and has tapped into that growing demographic with the UXV 500i. This updated machine is based on the existing UXV 500 platform, but gets a dose of technology with new fuel injection. Adding EFI helps make the 500 powerplant more versatile. If nothing else it’s just easier to use with hassle-free starting in extreme temperatures, or following a tip-over, and clean fueling regardless of altitude and weather conditions. Fortunately, it’s more than simple convenience. We had a carbureted version on hand and could easily tell that the 500i has better throttle response, runs smoother and has more power. Fuel delivery is crisper and that helps give the driver a better connection from their foot to the wheels.

The electric-start four-stroke engine is a 498cc dual overhead cam design with a claimed 36 horsepower. Those aren’t huge numbers, but they’re more than adequate to push a driver, passenger and all their gear around the trails. It’s rated to tow 1200 pounds, though we didn’t get a chance to haul anything other than ourselves. It’s not a racer, with top speeds in the low 40s. It’s not a drag specialist either, getting up to speed at a reasonable pace.

Even though Kymco upgraded to fuel injection, the carbureted version (UXV 500) is still available as an even more affordable option. Kymco stresses the concept of value, and it wants to put reliable vehicles in the public’s hands without costing an arm and leg. The 500i base model retails for $8799 and the carbureted version is only $7699. That’s $400 less than it did in previous years! More choices are always better, and Kymco is providing an important option to its budget-minded consumers.

Kymco offers many of the same features found on more expensive UTV competitors. A large, tilt bed, standard two-inch tow hitch and easy access cab make the UXV a competent working vehicle.

Just who are Kymco buyers? It could be anyone. The UXV has most of the same features you’ll find in a more expensive competitor – selectable 2WD/4WD with differential lock, three-point, automotive-style seat belts, cup holders, glove-box and under-hood storage, tilting hood and cargo bed, steel bumper and roll cage half-height foot nets and a tow hitch. Kymco also includes a factory-mounted winch bracket, which makes it extra easy to upgrade.

The whole package rolls on independent suspension and dual A-arms front and rear. Shocks with internal oil reservoirs are the same on all corners and offer 7.5 inches of travel and five-way preload adjustment. Combined with the stiff seat foam, it’s a fairly rigid ride on the trail. Mild engine output and a stiff chassis help prevent body roll so the UXV feels comfortable at trail pace. Getting it to drift the rear end takes a lead foot, proper corner setup and the right kind of dirt. One of the more noticeable traits on the 500i is a wide turning radius. We took it down into bayou-like sections and spent time threading trees and mudholes and the Kymco requires finding reverse in tight spots. This did give us a chance to get accustomed to shifting the automatic CVT transmission, which operates smoothly.

Selecting between 2WD and 4WD is a simple push of the left-side button, down near the light switch. The driver can switch between the settings while on the move and we had no problems with the system engaging or disengaging. The front differential lock is a little cheesy feeling with a plastic lever on the right side of the steering wheel. It works fine, though, and the extra traction provided will help get the 500i through whatever terrain passes underneath its 75.2-inch wheelbase and 12.2 inches of ground clearance.

Disc brakes provide plenty of stopping power for the 1157-pound UTV (claimed dry). The 25-inch Kenda tires provide enough traction to get the stopping power delivered to the ground. We were able to creep down some of the steeper hills in total control and on the faster sections were able to haul down no matter how hard we pushed it.

Riding in the cab is a minimalist experience. Everything is there, but the UXV lacks some of the comforts of other side-by-sides. The seats are removable and the foam is rigid. Getting in and out is simple thanks to a short web door as high as the base of the seat. This is nice for hopping in and out, but causes some concern if the XUV were to actually tip over. Also, the roll cage is a little suspect where the main bars join each other. Otherwise, we like how durable the Kymco looks and its utilitarian feel. It’s competent, but not full of bells and whistles. A

basic design and rugged components look like they will hold up to pressure washing or being left out in the weather. We didn’t have the chance to strap in a heavy load but it seems to be more of a work vehicle than it is recreational. The bed is nice and large with an easy-access folding tailgate. A lockable glove box adds storage along with an underseat pocket and a large bucket-style container under the flip-up hood.

The 500i is available in a special edition with alloy wheels, hard top and half windshield ($9329). Another step up is the limited edition which adds the same features, plus a 3000 pound winch ($10,199).

After riding the Kymco for two days, we came away impressed with the overall quality of the UXV. It does lack some of the refinement of the big UTV players, but try finding other machines that can be purchased at this price point. The 500i would be an excellent choice for agricultural use, hunting and mild recreation on a budget. With a growing infrastructure and major investment from the parent company, Kymco is here to stay, and they deserve a look from anyone seeking a value-packed side-by-side.
